Growing Bones and CrossFit Kids: The Biology Every Kids Coach Should Know

Teaching children has its own set of challenges compared to teaching adults. Most important to mention are the biological and psychological changes children go through until they reach adulthood. Since having kids train in CrossFit is working not only their muscle groups, but also the structural aspects that go with the muscular, its important to know how bones grow and the weak spots kids will have when growth spurts occur. These growth spurts are when a trainer needs to be the most vigilant for the child. The more a trainer knows, the less risk there is for the child or teenager. Similarly, it’s also important for a trainer to understand specific hormones and psychological changes that children go through when reaching puberty.

Issue #1: Children and Bones

Bones increase in size only by appositional growth, which is the formation of new bone on the surface of older bone or cartilage. This is basic biological data, but I encourage all CrossFit Kids coaches to do research on bone growth during growth spurts and how to know the signs that this is occurring.
