A few years ago, one of my athletes pulled me aside after a workout. Terry apologized to me for spotty attendance, explaining that his son Reece was terminally ill and that he spent his nights at the hospital so Reece wouldn't have to be alone.


In the morning, Terry would go off to work as an human resources executive. Every night he returned to the hospital to be with Reece. Given the rigor of his schedule, he was finding it difficult to make workouts.
