Weightlifters: Park Those Preconceptions at the Door

In the course of the past several years, I’ve coached an increasing number of newcomers to the sport, presented seminars in non-traditional weightlifting facilities, and interacted with large audiences of newly-minted enthusiasts.


Along the way, certain beliefs have surfaced on their part. These beliefs, preconceptions, and misconceptions have a way of inhibiting progress. Some effort by both coaches and athletes is necessary to move forward. 


I mostly encounter these misconceptions from people who have never been lifestyle athletes, and have decided to embark upon the athlete pathway after getting advice from other people who have also never been lifestylers. My commentary in this piece is directed at weightlifters, but I’m sure coaches in other sports have run into the same, or similar, situations.

A career as a coach or trainer is a never ending opportunity to learn, grow, and re-invent yourself.


You don’t get to pick the problems you solve because everyone who you come across is different: Different genders, ages, fitness levels, disposable time, disposable income, and almost always unsure of their commitment.
