Training the Overspecialized Athlete

Despite the many warnings from myself and others in the fitness community, youth overspecialization concurrent with sedentarism is a growing trend. Our kids sit more than ever, eyes fixed to screens, and the only interruption is when they are carted off to practice or a private skills session for the single sport they play year-round.



This is the reality faced by trainers and coaches of youth athletes. Youth often go from sitting all day to marathon practices and pointless conditioning intended only to elicit more exhaustion. The only thing more sapped than the kid’s enthusiasm is the parent’s pocketbook. Yet, if a child loves their sport and wants to be competitive, they are told they have little choice but to commit to the gauntlet, lest they be left behind.
