Smart Ways to Manage Your Lifter's Performance

Bob Takano
Olympic Weightlifting

Being in the warm-up room for so many competitions, I get a good chance to observe the normal coaching habits of a large number of both veteran and novice coaches. A number of observations about the state of weightlifting coaching have come to mind in reflection.

  • Coaching as it takes place in weightlifting is a combination of teaching, developmental supervision, and performance management.
  • The teaching of skills dominates the early training of an athlete, but some attention must be given over to the development of the athlete’s organism and psyche.
  • As training and development progresses, less time is directed toward teaching specifics and more effort is given over to supervising the training of the organism.
  • In a competitive setting, the time is past for teaching (but not learning) and organismic development, and the prime focus should be on performance management.
